My heartless love,
do you not feel for me
as you don your finery
and I lose myself for love of thee?
Come kiss me quick
and be quickly on your way,
lest the neighbours see us
and say your heart is mine.
Translated by Michael Eleftheriou
The balos is a much-loved dance in a 2/4 rhythm, from the Greek islands and Asia Minor coast. Danced face to face by smiling couples, executing freely improvised steps and figures elegantly and smoothly, it’s as though the dancers are in reality playing a flirting game of body language. The singer chooses erotic couplets from an endless repertoire to suit his mood and sings them to the melody. Featuring a compania with violin, oud, lute and toubeleki (goblet drum).
