Polyphonic Group of Pogoni

The members of the Polyphonic Group of Pogoni were: Anthoula Kotsou, Pinelopi Matsia, Sofia Matsia, Dimitris Matsias, Lazaros Tsiavos, and Sokratis Tsiavos. All hailed from Ktismata Pogoniou, a village near the Greek-Albanian border with a long-standing tradition of polyphonic singing in Epirus.

The ensemble played a significant role in preserving the ancient musical idiom of polyphonic song, which has pentatonic roots and Byzantine influences. With numerous performances in Greece and across Europe since 1976, it contributed to the safeguarding of a wide range of traditional Epirote songs, including laments, narrative ballads, klephtic songs, and songs of exile, all performed in their authentic polyphonic form with respect and the highest possible fidelity to the original tradition. In 1993, the ensemble released a record featuring selected polyphonic songs from the region, capturing their authentic form.
