Τριάντα καράβια αρμένιζαν
Thirty ships were sailing towards Cape Malea and Hydra,
ten of them belonged to France and ten of them to England,
the others all belonged to Moscow, to the Russian king.
But they came and anchored in the port of Pylos.
They set about composing letters and sent them to Brahim:
– Clear out, Brahim, of the Morea, clear out of Greece.

έρημε Μπραήμη μ’, φραντσέ- μωρέ, φραντσέζικα
τα δέκα ήταν φραντσέζικα, τα δέκα της Αγγλίας
και τ’ άλλα ήταν του Μόσκοβα, του βασιλιά του Ρούσου
μα ήρθανε κι αράξανε στην Πύλο στο λιμάνι,
πιάνουν και γράφουν γράμματα και στο Μπραήμη στέλνουν.
– Φεύγα Μπραήμ' απ’ το Μοριά.
The song refers to the battle of Navarino, close to Pylos in the south-west Peloponnese. In 1827 the fleets of the Great Powers (England, France and Russia) engaged the Turkish-Egyptian fleet under Ibrahim Pasha as it lay at anchor in the Navarino. The battle that ensued concluded with the victory of the Great Powers and recognition of Greece’s independence from the Ottomans. Miranda Terzopoulou (2002)
