I’ll jump from the railings, I’ll fall to my death;
and my love calls out: “For the love of God, catch him!”
You’re white as snow, red as fire,
like the marbles in Agia Sophia, in Constantinople.
Translated by Michael Eleftheriou
Domna Samiou sings a cappella, in a slow 4/4 rhythm, erotic couplets she recorded in Macedonia, but which were in all likelihood brought there by refugees from Asia Minor. We often encounter the two couplets sung here in other compositions from the Asia Minor coast and the islands of the eastern Aegean sung in a karsilamas (9/8) dance rhythm.
Miranda Terzopoulou (2018)
Studio recording (1979).
