Κάλαντα Λαζάρου
Ήρθ’ ο Λάζαρος, ήρθαν τα Βάγια, καλή μέρα σας, καλή σας μέρα.
Τώρα λάλησε πουλί κι αηδόνι, τώρα λάλησε και χελιδόνι.
ν-Εσένα πρέπ’, αφέντη μου, ν-αυτά τα τρία ζευγάρια
τα ντρέχεις τα, τα σπέρνεις τα, γυρίζεις τριβολά τα.
Και σκάλωσεν ο κάτσινος στης νεραντζιάς τον κλώνο,
και σκάλωσεν τ’ αλέτρι μου στης νεραντζιάς τη ρίζα.
Πίσου, μαύρε μ’, πίσου, ξανθέ μ’, πίσου, καραβουκύρη,
μην πάρω τα κουδούνια σου και βάλω τα στο μαύρο μ’.
ν-Εγώ το μαύρο θέλω ντο, το μαύρο χρειάζομαί ντο,
για να τον στέλνω στο γιαλό να κουβαλεί τις πέτρες.
The carols are popular songs of praise, usually sung by children, sometimes also by adults, on the eve of certain major religious feasts. Thus, in Greece, in addition to the Christmas carols, there are those for New Year’s, Epiphany (January 6), Palm Sunday, and so on.
Small groups go from door to door to sing the carols, accompanied by various musical instruments or simply by a triangle.
In general, the first stanzas of the carols comment on the event being celebrated. These are followed by praise and good wishes for the master and mistress of the house, as well as for other members of the family. The final verses are often a request for gifts: money, cakes, or fruit.
The carols recorded on this disc relate to the miracle of the resurrection of Lazarus, celebrated on the eve of Palm Sunday.
