Forty brave lads and an old man
took up arms and dressed for war.
Slinging their muskets, the mountains light up,
buckling on their swords, oceans shine.
They set off on their way, along the coast
to their mother, her blessing to receive:
‘May Fate smile on you, my children.
Go with God’.

Σαράντα παλικάρια κι ένας γέροντας
στολίστ’καν κι αρματώθ’καν για τουν πόλιμου.
Βάζουνε τα ντουφέκια τ’ς, φέγγουν τα βουνά,
βάζουν και τα σπαθιά τους, λάμπουν θάλασσες.
Παίρνουν το δρόμο πάνε, τη γιαλόστρατα,1
στη μάνα τους πηγαίνουν την ευχή τ’ς να τ’ς δώσ’.
Ώρα καλή παιδιά μου κι αντέτ’ στο καλό.
