Zacharias Karounis

Born in 1977 in Pakia, Laconia, Peloponnese, he studied at the Theological School of the University of Athens, where he completed postgraduate studies in Liturgics with a specialization in Hymnology, graduating with distinction. He also studied Byzantine music and European music theory at the Athens Conservatoire on a scholarship, earning his degree in Byzantine Music with unanimous highest honors. At the same institution, he attended classical singing lessons.

As a vocalist, he has performed in theatrical productions at the National Theatre and collaborated with prominent artists and ensembles, including the Orchestra of Colors of Manos Hadjidakis. He has performed in concerts and musical productions across Athens and throughout Greece, and has focused extensively on the collection and interpretation of songs from Asia Minor, Cappadocia, Pontus, and Turkey. He maintained a long-term and close collaboration with Domna Samiou, participating in research, recordings, and musical events until her passing.

His work also includes significant collaborations with Stavros Xarhakos, performing in numerous productions and concerts in Greece and abroad, as well as collaborations with Christos Leontis. In recent years, he has focused on the intersection of music and theatre, taking on performer roles in major theatrical productions, as well as artistic direction and music staging. He has curated major productions for the Holy Metropolis of Nea Ionia, Filadelfeia, Heraklion, and Chalkidona, presenting musical tributes in prestigious venues such as the Athens Concert Hall and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.

He has released five solo albums and has participated in numerous other recordings.
