Χελιδόνα έρχεται
απ’ τη Μαύρη θάλασσα,
θάλασσα ν-απέρασε
έκατσε και λάλησε.
Μώρ’ καλή νοικοκυρά,
σέβα, έβγα στο κελάρι,
φέρε αυγά σαρακοστιά
και σκοινιά πεντηκοστά,
για να δέσομε το Μάρτη
και το τσιλιμπουρδάκι
κι αν δεν έχετε αυγά
παίρνομε την κλωσσαριά,
να γεννάει, να κλωσάει,
και να σέρνει τα πουλιά.
The chelidonismata (swallow songs) are rhythmic little songs that children sang on the 1st of March. They would go from house to house carrying a wooden model of a swallow to celebrate the arrival of spring and the swallows. The housewives gave them eggs. This custom has its roots in antiquity.
