Περτίτζιν μου κακκουριστό, που γέρνεις το λαώνιν,1
πε μου που πίνεις το νερόν να ρτω να ψιώ τζι εγιώνι,
ποΰρισε2 τζι έλα ποτζιά,3 δώσ’ μου τα σιείλη τα γλυτζιά
τζιαί μεν μου κάμνεις την καρκιάν.
Τα τζιύμματα της θάλασσας τζιαί τα λαμπρά μου εν έναν
ποτέ τους εν ισβήνουσιν γιατ’ εν συμπαλισμένα,4
έλα απ’ έξω του βραμού τζιαί μεν κρώννεσαι5 κανενού
να σε φιλήσω τζιαί κανού.6

In the coastal towns of Cyprus (Limassol, Larnaca, Famagusta, Kyrenia), folk competitions of local instrumentalists, dancers, and singers take place during the festival of the Holy Spirit. With the Paphitissa —that is, the Paphian “voice” or melody— the best singers compete, and the winner is awarded a prize.
It consists of couplets in fifteen-syllable and eight-syllable verse for a soloist, and is complemented by an instrumental prelude and a choral introduction-refrain. The solo part is metrically free in the sections with fifteen-syllable lines, and in 2/4 meter when the verse changes. The instrumental and choral parts also follow this same meter.
