A song particularly beloved in the villages of Thebes, traditionally sung during the grape harvest. It was taught to us by Paraskevi Batsouli from Kaznesi. It is another example of a hemiolic dactylic syrtos (a type of kalamatianos) in tetrameter.
The genos (modal genus) is characterized by a central tetrachord with the tonic at the base and a diminished fourth, which results in an augmented disjunctive tone leading to the fifth degree (maqam Dügâh). Strictly speaking, the genos should be classified as chromatic; however, Byzantine theory —due to its own reasoning— places it among the diatonic chroes, and specifically within the variant of the plagal first dyad known as Naos.
Modern Greek folk musicians refer to this dromos (mode) as Saba. While the authentic Saba shares the same intervallic structure, its tonal development and melodic behaviour are different. Nonetheless, since the maqams Dügâh and Saba are closely related, we structured the piece’s introduction along the lines of the original maqam Saba.
