Ποιος ήτο που τραούησε εχτές βραδίς στη βίγλα
κι όλα τα δέντρη εμάρανε κι όλα ξερίζωσέ τα
και ράισε τη φυλακή, ίριξε και το κάστρο,
και πλάκωσε το βασιλιά με τη βασιλοπούλα;
Μια καλογριά τ’ αφ’κράστηκε από το Αγιονόρος,
τσαλοπατεί τα ράσα της και το σταυρό της ρίχτει.
Άμε, σταυρέ, στην εκκλησιά, ράσα μου, στ’ Αγιονόρος,
κι εγιώ με το τραουιστή απόψε θα ξομείνω,
απόψε κι άλλη μια βραδιά κι ώστα να ξημερώσει,
να τον χορτάσω το φιλί, πόθο να τον γεμώσω.
Karpathos was a secluded island, and for that reason it managed to preserve its customs, traditions, and musical heritage in a purer form and for a longer time. Even today, during festivals and weddings, one can hear heroic songs, ballads, and other musical types that are on the verge of disappearing.
The meter used here is 6/8, that of the local syrmatikos dance. It belongs to a category of two-part songs found only on Karpathos. These were first identified by the Swiss musicologist Baud-Bovy. The second voice, which serves as the iso (drone), consists of the subtonic and the tonic of the melody.
