The evening star has set, the morning star arisen,
but back home from school my boy still isn’t.
The evening star for company, the moon to light his way,

The teacher was shouting and brandishing his cane,

Η Πούλια εβασίλεψε κι ο Αυγερινός εφάνη
και το παιδί μου στο σχολειό κι ακόμα δεν εφάνη.
Το φεγγαράκι του ’φεγγε κι η Πούλια του μιλούσε
κι ο Αυγερινός ο λαμπερός μού το παρηγορούσε.
Ο δάσκαλος το μάλωνε με μια ψιλή βεργίτσα,
τα γράμματα τα φόρτωνε στου κόκορα τ’ν ουρίτσα.
Αφέντης του το μάλωνε «βάλε μυαλό, βρε Γιάννη,
γιατί σαράντα κόκοροι μας κάνουν ένα Γιάννη».
