Μοιρολόι
The lament played here on the clarinet is a mournful melody: traditional Epirote musicians are fond of imitating the voices of women lamenting their dead in the traditional manner.
The clarinet, an instrument extremely widespread in Greek folk music, arrived in the country around 1835. At first, clarinets in B-flat and A-flat were used. Today (translator’s note: the edition was published in 1970), the C clarinet is widely employed.
