Yiorgos Remoundos

(1954–2022) | He was born in Nikaia, Piraeus. He held a degree from the Law School of the University of Athens. He began his musical education in Byzantine music in 1968 at the then newly established School of Byzantine Music of the Holy Metropolis of Nikaia. Later, he joined the school of the Society for the Dissemination of National Music and remained a student of Simon Karas until 1993. Between 1990 and 1993, he taught Byzantine music and Greek folk songs at the society’s school. In 1990, he obtained a diploma in Byzantine music from the “Philippos Nakas” Conservatory under the guidance of Lykourgos Angelopoulos.

In 1991, he was appointed as protopsaltes (chief chanter) at the University Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, Kapnikareas, in Athens. He founded a model Byzantine choir of about twenty members, called “Kalophonarides“, which participated in numerous events in and outside Athens, as well as in radio and television broadcasts of the Greek national broadcaster.

In the later years of his life, he held the honorary title of Archon Protopsaltes of the Most Holy Metropolis of Chalcedon. He collaborated with Domna Samiou in concerts featuring carols and hymns, and his album The Akolouthia of Nymphios was released in 2002 by the Domna Samiou Greek Folk Music Association. Among other works, he also released the album “Oxeia, Vareia, Petasti”.

He passed away in 2022.
