The synkathistos, primarily a wedding dance danced at different phases of the wedding ceremony, mainly in the street as wedding parties make their way from one place to another, is played to a 9/8 rhythm (divided into 4+2+3), at a very quick tempo. A lively dance which has three steps of differing length and is danced individually or in pairs. Its name probably refers to the dance’s most characteristic movement: the gentle bending of one knee and then of the other.
