Vassilis Skaliotis

Clarinetist, born in the village of Dafni, Nafpaktia, in 1928. He joined the Philharmonic Orchestra of Mesolongi, where he learned the clarinet, and soon began performing at village festivals. In the 1960s, he took part in recordings of 45 rpm discs under the supervision of Domna Samiou. He was a member of the music ensemble of the Lykeion ton Ellinidon. Alongside his musical activity, he served as a police officer and, in that capacity, was also a member of the Gendarmerie band. He gave numerous performances in Greece and abroad (Canada, USA, etc.), standing out for his distinctive style, as he was among the few clarinetists who played a C-tuned clarinet.

A collection of 127 traditional songs and tunes from all over Greece that were first released on 45 rpm records between 1959 and 1969 under the direction and musical supervision of Domna Samiou. The collection was compiled and edited by Yiorgos Tsampras.

Concerts

Invited by Lina Lalandi, founder of the English Bach Festival and clavichordist, Domna Samiou made five appearances in the festival, presenting, in what could be the first time, the authentic traditional music of Greece to the English audience.
