Karyofyllis Doitsidis

(1930–2023) | Born in Karoti, Didymoteicho, he was an oud musician, singer, and composer, known as the “Bird of Thrace”.

In 1960, he founded the “Doitsidis Ensemble”, a local music and dance group that performed initially in Thrace and later throughout Greece. From 1958 to 1968 —the year he moved to Athens— he participated in broadcasts on the EIR Komotini radio station.

He performed at the Greek Dances Theatre “Dora Stratou” from 1968 to 1973 and took part in international song festivals, as well as concerts in Greece and abroad.

Together with his daughters, Theopoula and Lambriana, he formed a trio that played and sang Thracian music, releasing a total of eighteen personal albums, while also contributing to recordings by other leading artists. In 1985, the Doitsidis family won the first Audiovisual Media Award of the French Academy in Paris for the album “The Castle of Thrace”.

From 1980 to 1994, he ran the “Thracian Spot” (Θρακιώτικο Στέκι), a space dedicated exclusively to Thracian music, playing a decisive role in preserving and promoting the musical heritage of Thrace.
