Σόλο κανονάκι
The kanun (kanonaki) is a direct descendant of the Byzantine psaltery (psalterion) and a distant forerunner of Western spinets and harpsichords. It consists of a flat, trapezoid-shaped box, strung with enough strings to produce three full octaves plus three additional notes.
The kanun is capable of playing a wide range of microtones. Its tuning can be adjusted to accommodate a rich variety of oriental modes, and it can follow modal changes within the same piece. The strings are made of catgut or nylon, and they are plucked using plectrums attached to the performer’s index fingers.
