Lykourgos Angelopoulos

(1941–2014) | A distinguished cantor and professor of Byzantine music. Born in Pyrgos, Ilia (Peloponnese), he studied law at the University of Athens and Byzantine music under Simon Karas. He served as the protopsaltis (lead cantor) of the Church of Agia Irini in Athens, founded and directed the Greek Byzantine Choir, and taught Byzantine music at the Athens Conservatory as well as at the “Philippos Nakas” and “Nikos Skalkottas” Conservatories.

He directed the Schools of Byzantine Music of the Holy Metropolises of Ilia, Rethymno and Avlopotamos (Crete), and Fthiotida (Central Greece), and collaborated with the Hellenic Radio in the field of Byzantine music. He also worked with contemporary music and was a member of M. Peres’ research group, which investigated old Western chant and its relation to the Byzantine tradition. He also served as a member of the artistic committee of the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs for the music schools.

In 1994, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew conferred upon him the title of Archon Protopsaltis of the Most Holy Archdiocese of Constantinople.

Invited by Lina Lalandi, founder of the English Bach Festival and clavichordist, Domna Samiou made five appearances in the festival, presenting, in what could be the first time, the authentic traditional music of Greece to the English audience.
